The face of global trade is changing on an almost daily basis. From World Trade Organization (WTO) rulings to bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations, recent trade agreements have both opened borders for more robust trade while also sometimes moving forward at the expense of human rights and environmental protections.
Trade justice is the consideration of the human, environmental, and economic impacts of global trade policies when evaluating the intended outcomes of international rules and practices that govern global trade. ENGAGE is raising awareness about trade justice issues through the following campaigns and programs.
US-Thai Free Trade Agreement Speaker Tour
With the generous support of Oxfam America, ENGAGE organized a speaker throughout the month of October 2006 to raise awareness about the United States-Thai Free Trade Agreement (US-Thai FTA). The US-Thai FTA covers multiple trade issues, including foreign investment, government procurement, and intellectual property rights (IPR). The US-Thai FTA Speaker Tour focused on proposed IPR regulations included in the US-Thai FTA that would limit Thailand’s ability to produce and import generic versions of medicines and would jeopardize its access to high quality, affordable medicines.
